The building at 53 Dzirnavu Street was constructed in 1898, surviving the turn of the century and historical changes, having housed famous writers, politicians, and philosophers. The apartment walls are saturated with the scent of history, yet renovated with a modern taste.

Preserving architect Edmund von Trompovisk's unique style heritage, the house has been fully renovated, landscaped, and, thanks to its historical significance, included in the Latvian Cultural Heritage Fund.

The building's façade combines eclecticism and Art Nouveau, much like its name – romanticism and philosophy. In the 1930s, the house was home to the talented German philosopher and literary master Walter Benjamin, whose works inspired 53 Dzirnavu Street to be named in his honour – Benjamin's Romance.
